These dogs are very intelligent and can learn a lot within a short period of time. They are quick thinkers, but have a stubborn streak and can be standoffish at times. They are very gentle and fragile and should not be treated roughly. Their proud and independent disposition makes them very sensitive, and they can take offense for a long time if abused. These dogs are usually suspicious of strangers and dog-aggressive. They love their owners to the point of jealousy and can be very possessive about them.

Such dogs existed in China, Africa, and Turkey. They were possibly the ancestors of the modern toy breed together with the Techichi dogs, which were selected and worshipped by the Toltecs. There are no such a differentiation within the breed today. The only differentiation is based on the coat length: there exist smoothcoats and longcoats. The standard for the breed is rather wide: the weight varies from 2 to 6 pounds, the size should be proportioned and every coat color and pattern is permissible.
