The hallmark of the breed is its very small size. According to the breed standard developed by the AKC every animal over 6 pounds is disqualified from the conformation competitions, but they can reach up to 9 pounds. These dogs can be smoothcoats or longcoats. The head of these dogs is well-rounded and named “apple-dome,” the ears are large, erect and flaring to the sides; the luminous eyes are dark, large and wide-set. To lubricate such large eyes tears are produced in abundance and may fly from the dog's face.
