According to the AKC breed standard, the dogs should not exceed 6 pounds in weight, but pet quality animals may weigh up to 9 pounds. The dogs may be smooth-coated or long-coated. They have large, luminous eyes and long, erect ears. They measure 6-9 inches high at the withers, and have well-proportioned and firm bodies. They come in various colors and can be of two types: long-coated and short-coated. These dogs have fragile skeletons, and are prone to fractures and dislocations. They are not recommended for families with young children.

The breed appeared in Europe in the 19th century and was called after the state in Mexico there it had been found. The breed is very ancient; it originated probably in the 9th century and the Aztecs and Toltecs tribes worshipped it. Today, the myth of a teacup breed exists in public. It is true that these dogs are the smallest in the world and the only natural toy breed, but there is no division into “miniature” and “usual” species.
